Stress is a 4-letter word - or at least it should be! I'm sure most people reading this would tend to agree with me. There are so many things that cause stress: family; jobs; to-do lists, and I could go on, and on. At one time or another, we all feel overwhelmed.
A stressful day in the office would affect me in many different ways. Of course, there is stress eating. I could have the largest bag m&m's that is sold, and sit there and eat handful, after handful, and not even realize that I had almost eaten the whole bag. Needless to say, that played a big part in me becoming overweight. I would also have anxiety and panic attacks. I would sit at my desk shaking, and feeling like my heart was pounding out of my chest. I would have to medicate myself for the pounding heart and shaking to calm down. I would cry. I got migraines often, and also had stomach problems. I knew that my blood pressure was up, and there were often times I feared that I would have a stroke or a heart attack at my desk. I had many nights that I couldn't sleep because I was worried about what was on my desk. I was having a difficult time with depression. I was seriously worried about my health, with good reason. I had to change jobs. There came a time that I realized that my health was not worth it, and I just couldn't live like that anymore.
So, those are some of the things that I do that help manage my stress. Again, I'd welcome any comments, and ideas that others may have. Feel free to post comments to this blog for others to see. Your suggestion may help someone else!
That doesn't mean that I have no stress in my life now. Believe me, I have some stressful moments, and I am sure that you probably do, too. So, how do we learn to better manage the stresses that life throws at us? I have a few suggestions, but I would welcome suggestions from others.
- Breathe! Take deep breaths. Both Fitbit and the Apple Watch have breathing programs within them to guide you in breathing exercises.
- Do not keep candy or junk food at your desk if you are a stress-eater.
- Prioritize. What is the most important at this moment?
- Make "To-Do" lists. It feels good to cross something off.
- Get up and walk around. Fitbit and Apple Watch have hourly reminders to move. It's a good time to get away, breathe, and get some steps in, at the same time.
- Exercise. It's a great stress reliever.
- Take a little bit of time for yourself. Everyone needs that!
